Tomar

Tomar, once home to the Order of the Knights Templar, is a charming city with a wealth of artistic and cultural treasures. The old medieval quarter is built in the shape of a cross, pointing in the four cardinal directions, with a monastery at each end. In the centre is Praça da República square, with the main church of São João Baptista.

To the south is the Convento de São Francisco monastery and to the north is the old Convento da Anunciada monastery. To the east is the Museu da Levada, where you can admire old mills that were powered by the force of the Nabão River. On one of the banks lies the Convento de Santa Iria monastery and a little further on is the Igreja de Santa Maria do Olival church.
