The traditional fishing village has grown into a busy seaside resort but has managed to retain its own traditions alongside the many souvenir shops. On the beach, you can admire authentic fishing boats and women in traditional clothing drying and selling fresh fish.

A ride on the cable car (ascensor) to the higher Sítio is definitely worthwhile. From this 110-metre-high cliff, you have an impressive view of the town and the beach. You can also visit the 18th-century church Santuário de Nossa Senhora da Nazaré.

From here, you can descend to the fort with the lighthouse and see the world-famous Praia do Norte with its spectacular waves on the right-hand side. A paradise for experienced surfers but too dangerous for swimming!

Just outside Nazaré, 156 metres above sea level, you have a panoramic view of the region from Monte de São Bartolomeu. The short but steep climb to the top is definitely worth the effort.
